How to Embrace Change in Life
Change is an inevitable part of our lives. Career changes, moving, relationships starting or breaking down, getting older, watching friends or family members move on…
But change can be both exciting and nerve wracking.
How can we take these unsettling changes and embrace them? How can we find comfort in the unknown?
Find the Constant
When change happens, there is always some constant that remains.
For example, when someone moves abroad for work, the constant may be the family home that is always there to return to. It might be the daily text messages or voicenotes to family and friends. If you’re embracing a new job or relationship, hold on to an aspect of your identity you feel strongly about. Core values can really help you here.
Find something that brings predictability and comfort – no matter how small.
Find Connection
We have all experienced change – for better or for worse – at some point in our lives. Reaching out and finding connection can be a great source of reassurance.
It may require a moment of vulnerability but talk to others about how you’re feeling about the change. If you connect honestly and openly with others, you will not only be able to tackle the change together, but you’ll probably end up with friends for life.
Find Your Resilience
In my opinion, resilience is something that takes years and great effort to build. But times of change give us a great reason to start working on it. In order to begin to build your resilience, consider the difference between the things you do have control over, and the things you don’t have control over. If you accept that some things are simply beyond your control, you will begin to find resilience against those parts of the ‘big change’ that are more difficult to navigate.
And, if changes don’t work out as expected, having a keen eye on your priorities will help you face disappointments with resilience, and move on.
